Macro and Close-up Photos of Insects - Page 2 |
Site-Map | What's New |
| These insect photos were mostly taken around the US, although a few of the butterfly photos were taken in the butterfly house in Amsterdam, some in the butterfly conservatory of Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada. Most of the Praying Mantis photos were taken in that insect's natural environment. However, some of the extreme close-ups were taken of a Praying Mantis being kept in captivity as a pet. The extreme close-ups were taken with a Sigma f2.8 105mm macro lens with varying lengths of extension tubes. For me, there is a pleasure in capturing a crisp, sharp image of something I cannot see clearly with my own bare eyes. And there is, to my way of thinking, a kind of beauty in the details revealed about these small creatures that seem so alien to us. ![]() Jumping Spider #2521 Normally I prefer to photograph live subjects. However, this large, black jumping spider wouldn't sit still. Consequently, his spiked hairdo is largely the result of bug spray. Very effective stuff, that! |

![]() Brown Mantis #2140 In the fall, females - whether they have mated or not - will lay 'oothecae'. Oothecae are the egg cases from which baby mantises will hatch. While being laid, the oothecae consists of a foamy, light brown substance which hardens in a few hours. These egg cases can hatch up to several hundred baby mantises, which look like small versions of the adults. |
