The photos on this page were taken during a month-long trip through France in September of 2011. We traveled from Paris to Annecy, where we spent one night on our way to Riquewihr, France in the Alsace portion of the country along the so-called wine road. We spent a week in Riequewihr, which was an excellent center from which to explore the wine road and the small villages in Alsace. Many of these villages still have some or much of the medieval fortifications that date back to the 13th and 14th century. All of these villages are beautiful, interesting, clean and safe and a sheer pleasure to visit. The area is famous for wine and one can pass by mile after mile of vineyards while traveling from one village to another. The landscape there is also dotted with ancient castles. From Riquewihr, we traveled on to Aix En Provence, where we spent another week. Aix, as well as Avignon, are more modern cities, but cities that maintain much of their ancient history. After Aix En Provence, we traveled on to Carcassonne. The castle there is one of the largest in France, having undergone extensive restorations. It is hugely popular, one of the most visited tourist sites in France. From Carcassonne, we traveled out to many little villages, exploring Cathar country - an area famous for the Albigensian Crusades. During these crusades that occurred in the 1200s, the Catholic church and the people they sanctioned, murdered tens of thousands of people that believed in Catharism. During that era, that entire offshoot of Christianity was eliminated.
