La Recoleta Convent was constructed in the mid-1600's. It's now a museum containing Amazonian artifacts, pottery from the Huari, Chimu, and other Peruvian cultures, some stuffed animals and birds, a few well-preserved human mummies, and an extremely large collection of antique books and documents - many dating from the 1500's.

Although La Recoleta is an interesting place, it is a bit odd. It tries to have a little bit of a lot of different things but doesn't really specialize in any one thing. Unless, that is, you're interested in looking at - and not able to touch - a large collection of very old books. Most of which you can only see the back spline of from a distance. But admission is only S/5.00 so is worth the price of admission.
